On the site of the Magnus Church, the gospel has been preached since the 9th century. Excavations by Prof Dr A.E. van Giffen showed that the current nave had a number of wooden predecessors, presumably built in the 9th and 10th centuries. In the Middle Ages, Anloo was the main town of the dingspil Oostermoer. The church of Anloo was the mother church of Oostermoer, which extended from Zuidlaren to Borger. The church owes its name to Magnus, bishop of Trani (Italy). The bishop was canonised after his martyrdom. His death anniversary is commemorated on 19 August.
On the other side are two monuments close to each other. Kerkbrink 4 is a farmhouse with side aisle and living area with straight top from around 1900. Kerkbrink 6 is the former reformed vicarage and was built around 1890. The architect is J. Boelens Kzn, who rebuilt many churches in the 1920s to 1940s, including Anloo's Magnuskerk.
